1st Cannes Lions Educators Summit at 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity #CannesLionsEducator #EducatorsSummit
The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is the preeminent global learning and education event for professionals, educators and students. I am humbled and honored to be a co-chair with Steve Latham, Head of Talent & Training at Cannes Lions and Karen Freberg, professor at the University of Louisville, to help launch the 1st Cannes Lions Educators Summit at the 66th Cannes Lions Festival. It has been years in the making and below is a quick background of my involvement with Cannes Lions over the years and how the Educators summit came to be. Background
2001 first group of students attend Cannes Lions..
As a professor, I have been bringing hundreds of students to the International Festival of Creativity since 2001. I brought the first group of students to attend the festival from Michigan State University with colleague professor Linda Cowles as part of a study abroad program. Roger Hatchuel, Chairman of the Festival at that time, invited us to attend for one day the first year. The first year went so well that Roger invited us to attend for two days the following year. There were very few, if any professors or students at Cannes Lions during these early years as it was primarily an industry only event.
The Roger Hatchuel Academy was founded in 2003. The student academy takes place during the festival. It is designed to help students interested in pursuing a creative path in advertising launch their careers. I had two students attend the inaugural year. This was also the first year I met Terry Savage when he became CEO of Cannes Lions in 2003. In 2005 Terry was named Chairman.
2007 Student Delegate Option Added
In 2007 Cannes Lions, Chairman Terry Savage recognized the growing importance of educators and students to the festival and officially opened up the festival to students and professors by adding a week long student delegate option. I brought the first group of student delegates to attend the full week of the festival from Alfred University in 2007 and again in 2008. A handful of Universities began to bring students to the festival as part of their study abroad programs. 2008 was also the first year I met Steve Latham, head of Talent & Training and Phillip Thomas, then CEO (Now Chairman) at Cannes Lions. Steve and Phillip have been huge supporters of helping get educators and students to the festvial.
In 2012 and 2013 I also brought students from Syracuse University where I was teaching.
2016 Cannes Lions Social Media Creative Academy
In 2016, working with Steve Latham, I also helped to create the Social Media Creative Diploma for the Cannes Lions School and was the Dean of the Social Media Creative Academy for the first year. The Social Media Academy was discontinued as bigger needs / opportunities were coming on the horizon.
2019 1st Cannes Lions Educators Summit
Over the years I've encouraged many professors to attend Cannes Lions and create their own study abroad programs to bring students. In 2017, my friend and colleague Karen Freberg attended the Festival for the first time and was also blown away by the great content, learning opportunities and networking.
Karen noted that there was no formal way for students, professors and professionals to connect during the festival and had the idea for the Educators Summit to help create more opportunities for educators, students and industry to come together during the festival.
In 2017, Karen and I approached Steve Latham and Cannes Lions about the Educators Summit and now two years later on June 17, 2019 the 1st Cannes Lions Educators Summit is launching.
The Cannes Lions Educators Summit is building a global community of educators, students and professionals. The focus is to bring industry, educators and students together around tracks that focus on talent development, academia and the creative communications industry and connecting the key stakeholders.
