Google Glass In Class - How The Newhouse School At Syracuse University Is Using Wearable Technology In The Classroom
Small, wearable technology is about to burst into the market and is expected to be huge this Fall and over the coming years. Ultra-small small computer chips like the Quark chip from Intel make wearable technology like computer glasses, smartwatches, and other smart, wireless devices that measure activity level even more powerful. Analysts estimate shipments of wearable technology in 2013 will be 18 million devices. Over the five years that follow, wearable technology devices are predicted to exceed 170 million by 2018. This pace of adoption is similar to the early days of smartphones, which is the most rapidly adopted technology in history. Google plans to launch an app store for Google Glass and analysts estimate that Glass could become a $3 Billion per year market.
Some examples of wearable technology include:
Glasses - Google Glass / Glassup
Smartwatches - Google Smartwatch, Samsung Galaxy Gear, Qualcomm Toq, Apple iWatch
Sports and Activity Measurement - Jawbone Up, NIke Fuelband, Fitbit Flex, Misfit Shine, Bowflex Boost

I am a beta tester for Google Glass. Students are using Glass in my class and will develop ideas for Glass Apps using social tools to collaborate in teams. The teams will use social media to get feedback and to crowdsource the best ideas. The winning ideas will be made into working Glass Apps.
Welcome to The #NewhouseSM4 Draft 2013
Eight students presented (or auditioned) their ideas for a Google Glass app. The rest of the students listened and then met the presenters in an open house setting to engage around ideas. After the conversations, the team leaders picked their teams. Let the innovation begin!
The purpose of this project is to teach students a new way to reach out and communicate using social media to problem-solve and innovate. These students will use their digital and social media skills to find and develop the best ideas, and prepare themselves for the jobs of the future at the same time.
